CFD stands for Computational Fluid Dynamics and when applied for vessels, it is most easily described as a virtual towing tank. With state-of-the-art hardware and software, the flow around the ship is simulated in detail.
Compared to towing tank tests CFD is just as accurate and often more cost effective, especially in the early design stages. In addition, CFD provides an almost unlimited amount of data flow details.
What questions can be answered?
CFD analysis provides greater understanding of flow phenomena, such as pressure drag, thrust deduction, wake flow and added resistance in waves. This can help answer elementary questions on resistance and propulsion, hull optimisation, efficiency and comfort onboard your vessel. Especially in the early design stages CFD analysis is a relatively cost effective and fast tool to optimise ship designs.
